THE SINKING OF THE COLOSSUS
Few people now remember the sinking of the great passenger ship Colossus
exactly fifty years ago. The number of people who were actually saved from her was
small, and some of those have died in the years since, so those who are still alive today
can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Then you will easily understand why I have
been asked to write about that sad day in 1912. The Colossus, then the largest ship in
the world, was thought by people at that time to be unsinkable. Yet, when she hit an
iceberg in thick fog in the North Atlantic Ocean, she actually disappeared in less than
twenty minutes, taking nearly fifteen hundred people with her. My own life was saved by
my youth. Being only a boy of fourteen, I was one of those lucky women and children
who, according to custom, were allowed to get away first from the sinking ship. The
selfless crew packed some sixty of us into a small boat and lowered it into the angry sea.
But during the ship’s last minutes more and more passengers, in their last hope of
escaping death, threw themselves widely into the sea and tried to scramble aboard our
boat, with the result that it finally turned over and we all found ourselves struggling for
our lives in the water. But I was strong enough to swim for three hour in the icy water
before a passing steamer picked me up.

answers each of the questions about it
COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS
One kind of culture shock faced by international students in the United States is
difficulty in communicating with Americans. When they first arrive in the United States,
they soon realize that their verbal skill is poor. First of all, they lack vocabulary, and they
have poor pronunciation, so American people cannot understand them. For example, a
few days ago, I asked an American student how to get to the library, but because. I have
trouble pronouncing r’s and l’s, the student didn’t understand me. I finally had to write it
in a piece of paper. International students also speak so softly because they are shy. It is
difficult for foreign people to understand Americans, too. Americans use incomplete
sentences, such as “Later” to mean “I’ll see you later,” and ”coming” to mean “Are you
coming ?” Also, Americans talk too fast, so it is often impossible to understand them. In
addition, Americans also use a lot of slang and idioms whose meanings non-native
speakers do not know. For example, the other day someone said to me, “That drives me
up the wall”, and I could not imagine what he meant. I had a picture in my mind of him
driving his car up a wall. It didn’t make sense to me. In short, communication is probably
the first problem the international students face in the United States. After a while,
however, their ears get used to the American way of speaking, and their own verbal
abilities improve.

London, he read books on science and experimented with electricity. He was eventually
employed by British chemist, Sir Humphry Davy as an assistant in Davy’s chemical
laboratory at the Royal Tnstitution. In 1833 he succeeded as a professor of chemistry
there.
Faraday made his scientific reputation by research in electricity and magnetism. In
1821 he plotted the magnetic field around a conductor carrying an electric current. In
1831 he discovered electromagnetic induction and demonstrated the principle that
